Flying When Pregnant: How To Feel Comfortable

Written by Nadine Zada | Sep 12, 2017 9:49:06 PM

The idea of flying when during pregnancy might be a little frightening.

  • Is it safe for you and your baby?
  • How late into your pregnancy can you fly?
  • What should you wear during the flight?

On this blog post, we answer to these questions.

Flying when pregnant is generally considered safe during a healthy pregnancy. However, you should speak to your doctor before planning your babymoon but unless your pregnancy is considered to be risky, you should be fine to start making plans.

Get a Letter From Your Doctor and Keep it With You!

To avoid problems when checking in - especially if your pregnancy is in a high stadium - get a letter from your Doctor confirming it is safe for you to fly. This letter is obligatory by many airlines and even if it’s not, it is highly recommended to obtain one.

Why?

In some circumstances, it may happen that you miss for instance your connection flight due to weather changes and you find yourself being bumped to a different airline. This airline might require a letter from you, even if your original booked airline didn’t.

When is the best time to travel?

Definitely the second trimester of your pregnancy journey (around week 14 to 28).
Why? There is a slightly higher risk of miscarriage in the first semester, and a higher risk of early labor in the third semester. Another reason is that you feel better as the morning sickness have passed and your agility will be higher than in other periods of your pregnancy. Don’t forget your mobility. In your third trimester, you will find it harder to move and get comfortable on the plane.

What to wear?

Comfortable clothes are essential during your flight. Slippers or Flip Flops are good because they allow for plenty of expansion in case your fight might swell and they are easy to get on and off at security when flying.

When it comes to your clothing, there are 2 important things to remember... bathroom visits and temperature fluctuations! As you'll likely be visiting the bathroom more often, you should wear clothes that are easy to remove in a very confined space. And you may also find that your rampaging hormones will make you feel cool one minute and hot the next, so dress layers that are easy to remove.

Additional Tip during BabymoonIf you are planning to have a longer trip than two weeks or more, make sure your clothes allow for expansion, including a couple of maxi dresses, which you can dress up or down as required.. Your body can change in 2 weeks very easily!

Where to sit on the plane?

Window seats are always nice, but when you are expecting a baby, the aisle seat is the place to be! It makes it easier for you to get up and down for frequent visits to the bathroom and for strolls up and down the cabin to stretch your legs.

Additional Tip: Pack a maternity pillow with you, especially if you are heading to a destination that is far away - it can make flying so much more comfortable.
